The elderly residents of Plato House, an upscale retirement facility in Big Rock, Colorado, are shocked when maintenance mechanic Pedro Gonzales finds 90-year old Diana Braun with a steak knife in her back lying in a pool of blood at the entrance to her apartment.

Marie Quizno, Big Rock’s Chief of Detectives investigates. She discovers that Diana Braun was not the sweet old woman that she portrayed herself to be. Quizno finds that with the aid of her son, IRS agent Joseph Braun, she had helped fellow residents Plato House with schemes to defraud the government of taxes, and then extorted blackmail from them to keep silent about their illegal activity.

Although suspicion falls on the victims of Diana’s blackmail, Quizno’s investigation leads to her son who is arrested and brought to trial. Justice is served by the surprise ending to the book.
